One of the biggest parts of livestock keeping, especially with an endangered breed, is record keeping. Birth dates, weights, vaccinations, locations on or off property - all of this goes into keeping animals and assuring we are aware and present with our animals. We all have our methods to this, from paper and pencil, spreadsheets, to online systems, and today we wanted to share a bit of advertisement for one that Emily has found she enjoys at Conner Prairie!
Conner Prairie houses one of our largest herds of Arapawa Island Goats, amongst a good handful of other heritage breeds for conservation. With hundreds of animals to manage, paper and pencil would take too long and, let's be honest, is just too easy to lose or have destroyed. Spreadsheets work well, but they can be limiting on who has access as well as when you can get to them.
Emily has found that Farmbrite works incredibly well for her system, management, and her team out at Conner Prairie! With access on your phone, anyone can get into the system. There are also special permissions to lock sensitive info you don't want people to change.
It tracks the important stuff like births, vaccination records, pasture rotations, genetics, and all sorts of other stuff to help you manage your herd with ease. There's even inventory management for semen for AI projects!
Utilizing Farmbrite, not only was she able to get a better record of all her animals and share it with her team with ease, but it even helped her look over pasture rotations and hay usage to save money!
Farmbrite is a paid service that starts around $29 a month with a free trial in the beginning. This could be a system that works well for you! If you'd like to read more, check out their article on her involvement and their webpage for more information! :D
