We are getting to the colder months of the year, and that means prep work for our four-legged friends. While these goats can handle some low temps and snow, and they build up a nice undercoat, it's good to make sure they're as comfortable as they can be! Some tips for heavy winter prep:
Check your shelters! Assure they are safe from cold drafts and have an area out of the elements they can seek shelter in.
Lots and lots of hay! With hay comes digestion, and with digestion and extra calories comes warmth.
While we always have it available, remember to provide lots of fresh water to keep them hydrated! While freezing temps can cause issues with ice, there are a few methods to keeping our bowls from freezing. From heated water bowls to a bottle of saltwater floating, see what works best for you and your area.
Some members have shown interest or take part in the deep litter method throughout winter time. Good bedding will help supply warmth, and with the deep litter method - the layering of fresh straw/shavings on top of soiled straw/shavings - it helps to generate additional heat through the decomposition process deep under the layers.
Check your fencing. Winter winds and heavy snow and ice can put strain on structures and fencing. Take time to double check them, and have tools on hand for necessary repairs.
As always, watch your herd and their behaviors throughout the winter. Cold weather can encourage illness, so be sure to double check on your herd here and there! One more look is never a bad thing.
Keep warm, and we wish everyone an easy and safe cold season!
